1976 September 12 - Vol 1 No (No name of paper in scrapbook) Records; Ancestors Traced by Genealogy Group As America grows in age and culture, her citizens become more interested in tracing their ancestries. During this Bicentennial year, the lineage searching trend has reached a crest, but Marion County can boast it got in ahead of the crowd by organizing a genealogy society in January 1976. A chapter was approved for the county chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society in March. President of the county group Paul J. Midlam claims the membership of 33 in the local organization can easily be doubled. Collectively, the chapters main concern, Midlam said, is preserving county records of genealogical and historical value. But individual members are very much involved in tracing their ancestries and some have discovered as many as 16 family branches, Midlam said. How does one begin the process of hunting early relatives? Sources nearly are endless, Midlam says. There are such legal routes as probate courts where marriage and birth records may be found, and estate settlements, wills and deeds, land bought and sold. The county engineer’s office is another wealth of information in the form of old maps. Libraries, newspapers, military records, census listings, cemeteries - all play their part in solving the genealogical puzzle. Many persons travel across country to find the sources of their family beginnings, Midlam said he has traced his ancestry back to the late 1700s, but some chapter members have found their beginnings in the 14th and 15th centuries. Midlam presently is copying and cataloging every cemetery in Marion County. Records show there should be between 115 and 120 private and public cemeteries in the county but there are only about 10 he can’t find, he said. He has been working on his project about three years and sees another year’s work ahead. Then he either will write a book on the history he has compiled or hire someone else to do the writing work, he said. The genealogy group is anxious to help those trying to trace forebears. Members receive letters from all over the country asking for such help, the chapter president said. Other chapter officers are Richard West, vice president; Dorothea Davis, recording secretary; Dolores Carter, corresponding secretary, and Robert Lindsey, treasurer. Regular meetings are the first Wednesday of each month September through June at 7:30 PM. The chapter currently is meeting at Republican Headquarters, 141 Main St. but is searching for a meeting place of its own. Dues are $7 per year with a renewal date of January 1977. But the president stresses that persons joined now will be paid up to January 1978. Anyone joining during the months of September, October and December will be considered charter members, Midlam said. This summer, a courthouse records committee headed by David Chaney found a storage place for discarded courthouse records. Cheney also has indexed, by name and Township, the complete 1834 Marion County tax workers. At a meeting last Thursday, the chapter decided to reproduce the official 1852 Marion County map containing all of the land and who owned it in the county at the halfway mark of the 19th century. The chapter is planning an all-day workshop October 9th at Pleasant High School. Six sessions, 50 minutes in length, will be conducted from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Participants will be able to attend all sessions or any part. They may come and go as they please, Midlam said. Registration will be 9:30 to 10:00 AM with a $1.00 registration fee for all sessions. Sessions will begin at 10 AM, 11 AM, 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 PM. Sack lunches will be enjoyed 11 50 AM to 12:30 PM. The six classes will be entitled Genealogy for Beginners - how to start; Local genealogical records - probate, local genealogy records - courthouse and library, census records, large libraries, and military records, the chapter is constantly searching for recording checking and preserving projects such historical items as old biblical records, old titles, old newspapers are always received gratefully by the membership.

January and February - no meetings March 3, 2008 - Brad Irons, Marion County Engineer, Records in the Engineer's Office Twenty members and guest attended the meeting. Brad Irons gave a very informative and interesting presentation about the duties, responsibilities, and accomplishments of the Marion County Engineers Office. There were examples of the many old records available there including pages from survey books, old maps and other interesting and exciting records available at the Engineer's Office. Their office is in charge of snow removal, road maintenance and repairs, bridge repairs, ditch mowing, and many other land, road and building projects in progress, and recently completed, in the Marion area. There are many items housed in the Engineers office. Many maps, old and new are available. There is a large map on the wall showing the locations of old schools and cemeteries, many of which most people are unaware of. The old survey records show how the roads were laid out, and even include the old Indian Trails noting which tribes traveled which trails. They also show the location of the mills along the road, noting the owner, and often many other bits of informative historical information. The old road surveys would even include the events which occurred while the surveyors worked, such as which farmer put them up for the night, and with which families they shared a meal, giving the reader a glimpse into history. *Meeting minutes show the 20 copies of the Grand Prairie Cemetery Vol 2 book were printed and available for sale. Brochures were available for a genealogy conference in Indiana. Stories about family reunions. October 4, 2008 - Mary Jo Osburn, Marion County Recorder, Records in Her Office History of Recorder's Office. In 1787 the Northwest Territory was formed from land north and west of the Ohio River. In 1803, Ohio became a state, but the state constitution did not provide for a recorder's office. The first state legislature mandated that the recorder be appointed to each county by the judge of Common Pleas. In 1829, the Recorder's office became an elected position. Then, in 1936, its four year term was established. The Recorder's Office is responsible for recording, maintaining and archiving records that pertain to real estate. Records held in the Recorder's Office include deeds, mortgages, government liens and financing statements' which pertain to real estate. Their records date back to 1822 with records from Delaware County. Marion county was formed in 1824. They have city and county directories back to 1903. Old Church Registry, Roster of Ohio Soldiers, 1861-1866, Roster of Ohio Soldiers and Marines WW1, 1917 and 1818 Veterans Grave Plat (by the WPA), WW2 Honor Role, etc. They also have information on village name changes, such as Green Camp/Buerwick, Kirkpatrick/Latimberville, Martel/Three Locusts, Meeker/Scott Town, New Bloomington/Bloomington/Agosta, and Prosect/Middleton. November 1, 2008 - Nancy Whitaker, Arlington National Cemetery Land of cemetery was originally owned by George Washington Parke Custis and his wife Mary Lee. The land was inherited by their daughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis, who was the wife of Robert E. Lee. During the unrest of the Civil War, the Lee family left their home, which was then confiscated for back taxes. At that point, Brigadier General Montgomery C. Meigs appropriated the grounds as a cemetery. A 20x10 vault was built in the rose garden, which contained the remains of 1800 Bull Run causalities. It was one of the first monuments for the Union dead during the Civil War. Through land disputes, the Lee family later recovered ownership of the property. At that point, Congress purchased the property form the Lee's for $150,000 because they did not want to pay the cost of relocating the bodies interned in the cemetery. Today there are soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery from the Revolutionary War clear up through the current day. It gets 4 million visitors each year. On this date there are 340,000 services member, spouses and children buried there on about 624 of the 1100 acres which make up the cemetery. There are as many as 100 burials a week. Site to see include The Riderless Horse, the Eternal Flame, The Space Shuttle Challenger memorial or more. Famous people buried there include Audie Murphy, Glenn Miller, Hugo Black, William Howard Taft, Teddy Roosevelt, and many. more.. Sentinals who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are members of the 3rd US Infantry, who make a 2yr commitment to guard the tomb. They must reside on site, not watch any TV for the first 6 months, study 5 hours a day, dress in front of a mirror. They are not permitted to swear in public or consume alcohol for the rest of his life. December 6, 2008 Luncheon, Prospect Street ME Church, Annual Christmas Party Members shared stories about their Christmas memories and traditions. One included hiding a pickle ornament in the Christmas tree and whomever found it received an extra prize. They shared favorite locations to see lights, including one cemetery in Ohio that decorates all of the headstones with Christmas lights.
